What Is Endoscopy?

Endoscopy is a minimally invasive way to examine and treat the digestive tract using a thin, flexible camera.

It helps investigate symptoms (for example reflux, indigestion, bleeding, change in bowel habit) and allows targeted treatments such as polyp removal, biopsy or dilation during the same visit.

Endoscopy remains the gold‑standard test for many upper‑ and lower‑GI conditions and enables early cancer detection and prevention through screening and surveillance.

Who Might Need An Endoscopy?

Your consultant may recommend endoscopy if you have persistent indigestion or reflux, unexplained abdominal pain or bloating, iron‑deficiency anaemia, rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habit, unintentional weight loss, or a family history of bowel/stomach cancer

Early assessment supports swift, accurate treatment.

Seek urgent medical advice if you have difficulty swallowing, black/tarry stools, vomiting blood, a palpable abdominal mass, or significant unintended weight loss. These “red flags” can indicate serious disease and warrant prompt investigation.

Our Advanced Endoscopic Procedures

Gastroscopy
(Upper GI Endoscopy)

Examination of the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum — gold standard for reflux, indigestion, dysphagia, anaemia, and suspected coeliac disease.

Capsule endoscopy

Non-invasive imaging of small intestine with a swallowable camera capsule.

ERCP

Combined endoscopy and X-ray to treat bile and pancreatic duct issues.

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)

High-resolution imaging for precise diagnosis of GI and pancreatic diseases.

Barrett’s esophagus management

Early detection and treatment to prevent esophageal cancer.

Endoscopic Dilatation

A therapeutic procedure to gently stretch narrowed areas of the oesophagus, stomach, or intestine that cause swallowing difficulty or obstruction.

PEG Tube Placement

Endoscopic placement of a feeding tube directly into the stomach for patients requiring long-term nutritional support.

Colonoscopy

Full assessment of the colon and rectum. Used to investigate rectal bleeding, change in bowel habit, or screen for colorectal cancer. Polyps can be removed during the procedure.

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

Targets the left side of the colon, typically for patients with rectal bleeding or lower abdominal symptoms.

Polypectomy and Biopsy

Removal of polyps and tissue sampling during colonoscopy or gastroscopy. All samples are sent for detailed histological analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a gastroscopy and a colonoscopy?

A gastroscopy examines the upper digestive tract (oesophagus, stomach, duodenum), while a colonoscopy investigates the large intestine (colon and rectum).

Do I need to fast before the procedure?

Yes. For gastroscopy, you should fast for at least 6 hours. For colonoscopy, a bowel preparation and clear liquid diet are required in advance. Instructions will be provided.

Is sedation available?

Yes. Sedation is optional and offered to help you feel more relaxed. You will need someone to escort you home if sedation is used.

Will the procedure be painful?

These procedures are generally well-tolerated. Mild discomfort or bloating is possible, but pain is uncommon. Sedation or throat spray may be used to enhance comfort.

How long does the procedure take?

A gastroscopy takes 10–15 minutes. A colonoscopy lasts 20–30 minutes. Additional time may be needed for preparation and recovery.

When will I receive my results?

Initial results may be discussed on the same day. Biopsy results typically take 5–10 working days, followed by a detailed review with your consultant.

Can I drive after the procedure?

If sedation is used, you must not drive for 24 hours. Without sedation, you can return to normal activity straight away.

Is the procedure covered by insurance?

Yes. We are recognised by Bupa, AXA, Aviva, Cigna, Healix, and most other insurers. Our team can help arrange authorisation if needed.

What if a polyp is found?

Polyps can usually be removed during the colonoscopy and sent for histology. Your consultant will explain next steps in detail.

Where will the procedure take place?

Procedures are performed at our centre or at one of our trusted London hospital partners, depending on the case. Consultations take place at LSDC Healthcare near Liverpool Street Station.
