Menopause and HRT care should be clinically clear, not trend-driven

Menopause care has become noisier online, not necessarily better. Many women arrive confused by mixed messages about blood tests, “bioidentical” hormones, testosterone, breast cancer risk, clot risk, or whether they are “too young” to be peri-menopausal.

At LSDC Healthcare, the goal is to replace that noise with a structured consultation: symptom pattern, menstrual history, medical risk, whether HRT is appropriate, whether another condition could be overlapping, and what the safest next step looks like for you.

Where HRT is appropriate, treatment may involve regulated body-identical or other licensed hormone options, chosen according to symptoms, uterine status, clot risk, cardiovascular profile, preference, and response over time. Where HRT is not suitable, not desired, or not enough on its own, other evidence-based options can also be discussed.

What women usually want answered quickly

  • Am I in perimenopause or menopause, and does it fit my symptoms?
  • Do I actually need blood tests or are my symptoms enough to diagnose?
  • Is HRT appropriate for me, and which form is likely to be safest?
  • If I still have a uterus, do I need progesterone with HRT?
  • Could thyroid dysfunction, anaemia, sleep problems or another issue be confusing the picture?
  • What are my options if I cannot or do not want to take HRT?
Diagnosis & investigations

Do you need blood tests for menopause?

Often, no. For many women over 45 with typical symptoms, diagnosis is based on symptoms and menstrual history. Testing becomes more useful when the picture is less straightforward, when another condition could be contributing, or when the clinical question is not simply “is this menopause?”

When tests may not be the main issue

  • Typical peri-menopausal or menopausal symptoms in women over 45
  • Clear cycle changes plus vasomotor symptoms
  • Women mainly needing risk assessment, treatment discussion and safe prescribing
  • Cases where over-testing would not change management

When tests may genuinely help

  • Younger age or concern about early menopause / POI
  • Uncertain cycles because of contraception or complex history
  • Symptoms that overlap with thyroid disease, anaemia, metabolic or sleep-related issues
  • Poor response to treatment, complex medical risk, or a need to monitor selected therapies carefully

FAQ

FAQ - Private Menopause Clinic London

Do I need blood tests to diagnose menopause?

Often not. In many women over 45 with typical symptoms, menopause or perimenopause is diagnosed clinically from symptoms and menstrual history. Tests are more useful when the picture is uncertain, age is younger, or another condition may be contributing.

Is HRT safe?

For many women, HRT can be an appropriate and effective treatment when prescribed after proper assessment. Suitability depends on your age, symptoms, uterine status, medical history, clot risk, cancer history and overall risk profile.

Do I need progesterone with HRT?

If you still have a uterus, oestrogen is usually prescribed with progesterone or a progestogen to protect the womb lining. If you have had a hysterectomy, oestrogen-only HRT may be appropriate in some cases.

What if I cannot or do not want to take HRT?

Not every woman wants HRT and not every woman is a suitable candidate. Depending on your symptoms, other evidence-based options may be discussed, including non-hormonal strategies, targeted symptom treatment, menopause-focused CBT, and selective referral into other specialist pathways.

Can testosterone be considered during menopause?

Sometimes. Testosterone may be considered in selected women, especially when low sexual desire persists despite broader assessment and appropriate optimisation of other menopause treatment.

Could thyroid disease or another condition be mistaken for menopause?

Yes. Symptoms such as fatigue, low mood, poor concentration, sleep problems, palpitations and weight change can overlap with thyroid, metabolic, sleep-related and other medical issues. That is one reason structured review matters.

Are menopause consultations insured or self-pay?

Specialist menopause and HRT consultations are usually self-pay. Some associated investigations may be claimable depending on indication and insurer, particularly when the issue is framed as a broader medical or endocrine concern.
