Located just two minutes from Liverpool Street Station, our modern clinic offers rapid diagnosis, personalised treatment plans, and long-term management strategies for patients living with IBD.

What Is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)?

IBD is a term for chronic inflammatory conditions of the digestive tract:

  • Crohn’s disease — can affect any part of the digestive tract from mouth to anus.

  • Ulcerative colitis — affects only the colon and rectum.

Both conditions are long-term, relapsing-remitting illnesses that require ongoing management by specialist gastroenterologists.

Symptoms of IBD

IBD symptoms vary depending on severity and whether the disease is active or in remission.

Common symptoms include:

  • Abdominal pain and cramping

  • Chronic diarrhoea (sometimes with blood or mucus)

  • Rectal bleeding

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Severe fatigue

  • Anaemia

  • Joint pain, skin or eye inflammation (extra-intestinal symptoms)

How Is IBD Diagnosed?

At LSDC, we use a combination of:

  • Blood tests (to check inflammation, anaemia, nutrition levels)

  • Stool tests (calprotectin, infection screening)

  • Endoscopy (colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy) — with biopsies

  • MRI or CT imaging — to assess inflammation or strictures

  • Capsule endoscopy — for small bowel Crohn’s disease

Frequently Asked Questions — IBD (Crohn’s & Colitis)

What is the difference between Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis?

Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the digestive tract, often in patches. Ulcerative colitis affects only the colon and rectum, usually continuously.

Is IBD the same as IBS?

No. IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is a functional condition without inflammation. IBD (Crohn’s and colitis) involves chronic inflammation seen on biopsy and scans.

Can IBD be cured?

No, but it can be managed. Modern therapies help many patients achieve long-term remission and good quality of life.

What treatments are available?

Treatments include aminosalicylates, steroids, immunomodulators, biologics, and small molecule therapies, as well as nutritional and surgical support.

Do I need surgery?

Not always. Many patients achieve control with medication. Surgery may be needed for strictures, fistulas, or severe disease.

How is IBD monitored long term?

Monitoring includes regular blood and stool tests, endoscopy, and imaging. Colonoscopy surveillance helps reduce bowel cancer risk.

Is IBD care covered by insurance?

Yes. LSDC is recognised by Bupa, AXA, Aviva, Cigna, Vitality, Healix and most other insurers.
