Prof Oben’s work at Johns Hopkins combined his previous interest in neuroscience with liver medicine and he published extensively on the interactions between the autonomic nervous system and liver repair via liver progenitor stem cells and liver stellate cells, in the context of Diabetic Liver Disease (Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Liver Disease, MASLD , previously Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD).
On the back of a very productive period at Johns Hopkins he was awarded a Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellowship funding on returning to London. His research has remained productive. He is currently a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and Edinburgh; a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association and a Fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. He specializes in Metabolic Health especially as it applies to the Liver and Type 2 Diabetes.
